Maintenance options for White Cedar
|

1. Left outdoors and uncovered, year round, White Cedar will weather to a silver grey. This is, by
far, the easiest maintenance. The grain will be relatively undisturbed, remain smooth and resist
checking or splitting. Degradation due to exposure is not significant for 50 or 60 years. The
longevity of the chair is determined more by its ability to remain ridged and resist flexing on the
fasteners; which will cause the chair to fail at the joints. This is not a real concern here. As you can
see; these chairs are stout.
If you need to accelerate the grey, you can apply a material that is not a stain or paint. A mix of
steel wool and vinegar darkens the tannins in the cedar to reproduce the affects of aging.
2. Any good quality paint over primer, or Marine Grade Spar Varnish (never use polyurethane!!!)
will give good results. We will apply a finish for an additional charge, or assist with more detailed info
for the do it yourself folks. Follow manufactures directions to maintain. These are proven, durable
procedures, but must be maintained.
